If you’re like many people, you made a few resolutions in January (maybe you even broke one or two by now!). But there is one—let’s call it a goal—that you should make and keep, no matter what time of year it is: that goal is to be the best industrial worker you can be.

The individuals who lead your company are goal-oriented because they already know the importance of having them. Goals are like a roadmap for guiding business in the direction of success. Well, guess what? They can do the same thing for you!

No matter where you are now in the company hierarchy, you should be setting your sights on growth and success. The leaders of the organization made their way to the top by doing the right things. You could begin your upward trajectory right now.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

Be cooperative and respectful

Leaders typically started as excellent team players. They showed respect to managers and co-workers. They also learned to be tolerant of those whose style and way of thinking was somewhat different. By doing this, they kept conflict to a minimum on their team, which made things easier for their boss.

Being cooperative made them the “go-to” person, and it wasn’t long before their value to the company was unmistakable. While it’s true that one person can cause chaos and tension on a team, it’s also a fact that one outstanding individual can infuse the team with a positive and productive attitude.

Maintain your focus amid all the distractions

Distractions are everywhere: phone calls, text messages, emails, meetings, or just a co-worker who can’t stop talking. Make a note of the distractions that are eating the most out of your time. Once you become aware of the biggest offenders, you can take steps to change your habits and deal with those pesky disruptions.

Learn to prioritize

There are going to be times when your workload is so heavy that it becomes a distraction in itself. When this happens, use a spreadsheet—or just a piece of paper—and make a list of all the work that needs to be done, along with their due dates. First, sort them by due dates, and then by difficulty, the time it will take to finish, or anything else that helps you to get a handle on things and ensure that you are working on your priorities.

Show your commitment

It’s easy to fall into the trap of merely showing up and going through the motions every day. But it’s boring and will eventually lead to dissatisfaction.

On the other hand, if you become fully invested in your work, you’ll start to feel connected to your job, and you’ll be more productive and successful. If you combine commitment with the other tips just mentioned, you’ll be well on your way to being the best industrial employee possible.
