If it’s time to move on from your current position, you may dream of simply announcing your departure and walking out. Of course, the problem with this is that you never know when you’ll need a reference. Also, the work world is small. You don’t want to get a reputation as untrustworthy or disloyal. At some point, your former boss or coworker might even have a lead on your dream job. So it’s very important to leave with grace and dignity. Here are some tips.

Tips for Leaving a Job While Maintaining A Good Relationship: 

Stay Flexible 

Two weeks’ notice is standard, but it isn’t set in stone. If you have enough time before your new job begins, consider offering a month instead. This will give your employer plenty of time to hire and train your replacement. On the other hand, be aware that your notice period might not be accepted. Your boss may ask you to leave sooner, especially if your position is ending or there are budget challenges in the organization. 

Tell the Boss 

You may be bursting to share the details of your new job with coworkers who have become friends, but wait until you’ve told your boss. One of the quickest ways to burn bridges is for your supervisor to hear the news through the grapevine. In the conversation with your boss, find out how they want to communicate that you’re leaving. Is there anyone specific you need to tell? Will it be announced in a team email? Let your supervisor set the schedule and tone of sharing the news. 

Control the Narrative 

Be straightforward and transparent about your next move, but avoid gossip. Tell your boss and coworkers where you’re going and what you’ll be doing, without bashing your current job. Avoid comparisons, salary discussions, and other potentially inflammatory topics. 

Focus on the Transition 

After giving notice, your biggest obligation to your current employer is to help create a smooth transition. Wrap up as many projects as possible. Consult with your boss and coworkers on how to tie up loose ends. Offer to meet with, or even train, your replacement. Do what you can to make life easier for those you’re leaving behind.
