How to Make Smarter Hiring Decisions

Finding the right person for each position isn’t easy. Ironically, the more candidates you have, the tougher it can be to choose the perfect applicant. After all, job descriptions don’t really tell the whole story, and the entire hiring process can be influenced by unconscious bias. Fortunately, there are some steps you can take to make smarter hiring decisions.

Understand the Job

Hiring Managers are often called on to interview candidates for positions they know very little about. Taking some time to sit down with a manager in that department and review the job description and expectations can help you more accurately screen applicants.

Make a Template

Writing up a list of interview questions is a great way to keep the interview on track. It also helps to ensure fairness in the process, as you can ask each candidate the same things. And you won’t have to worry that you’ve forgotten something you really need to know.

Listen and Follow Up

While it’s important to have an interview template, it’s equally important to know when to deviate from it. Don’t get so caught up in asking a standard list of questions that you forget to pay attention to the answers. Follow-up questioning can reveal valuable details about a candidate that may help you decide whether they are the right person for the position.

The CORE Assessment™

At The Resource, we take it a step further. We know that how a person is naturally hardwired has a major impact on the way they approach their work. Yet it can be tough for hiring managers to dig that deep. That’s why we developed our CORE Assessment™ to learn more about each candidate than would be possible in even the most in-depth job interview.

For our clients, we can use a job blueprint process that clearly defines the job responsibilities and expectations, and closely align those tasks with the CORE energy of candidates. This allows us to create matches between clients and candidates who are naturally the right fit for the position. Click Here to learn more about our CORE Assessment, and join us virtually on March 18th for our ‘Intro to The CORE Assessment’ client learning session.
