If you just got a new job, congratulations! This is truly an exciting time for you. But it can also be stressful, as you learn new routines and expectations. Follow these simple tips to make the first month of your new job a bit easier and more relaxed.

Learn the Expectations

As quickly as possible, seek to understand what it takes to succeed in your new position. Is your manager more interested in process or results? Are there pressing projects you should jump right into? What are the short-term and long-term goals and milestones, and how should you communicate your progress with management?

Prioritize

Starting a new job can feel like diving into a deep ocean with a strong current. You’ll need to find your rhythm soon or risk being dragged out to sea. Determine what you most urgently need to know, from where to find the restroom to when to take your lunch, as well as which projects need the most immediate attention. Focus on the most critical things, and add other elements as you have time and capacity.

Get a Quick Win or Two

Even a small success can help build your confidence while reassuring your teammates and your new boss that you add real value to the company. Look for the low-hanging fruit—where are the opportunities to make a visible impact in a timely manner?

Find a Buddy

Some companies have formal buddy systems where new hires are assigned to someone who can answer their questions. If you aren’t assigned one, find a buddy yourself! Look for someone on your team who seems friendly and approachable and has strong knowledge of the company processes. When you don’t know how something works, ask that person. If nothing else, they can probably point you in the right direction.

Learn the Culture

Don’t assume that things are the same as they were at your last job. Pay attention to the unwritten rules, and cultural tendencies. Human dynamics play a tremendous part in everything from how comfortable you feel at work to whether you are selected for choice projects. It helps to take the time to figure out this new-to-you culture rather than just doing things how you’ve always done them.

Show Up

Bring your authentic self to work every day. Just because you’re new doesn’t mean that your passion and personality shouldn’t shine through. Make a pledge to yourself that you’ll fully show up and participate each and every day.

Take It Easy

Remember that everyone was new once. You’re going to make mistakes and maybe ask a few of the same questions. So what? Everyone is constantly learning, no matter how long they’ve been on the job. Smile, relax and trust that it will all work out in the end.
