Job interviews can be nerve-wracking. You’re probably worried about presenting yourself in the best light, giving strong answers, and appearing worthy of the position. But you don’t want to worry too much so that it hurts your chances for success by wrapping you up in insecurity. Instead, focus on the things you can control, like making sure you are prepared. Here are three steps you can take to stand out from the crowd and become the candidate that interviewers will remember in the best possible way.
1. Do a Deep Dive
You probably know that it’s a good idea to learn something about the company before your interview. But don’t just glance at the organization’s social media or website homepage. Instead, dig a bit deeper. Have they published any articles or press releases? What’s their mission statement? What can you learn about their history?
Doing this advanced research gives you the opportunity to prepare relevant questions to ask your interviewer. You’ll want to ask about the role and duties, but your research lets you take it even further. Ask about a big project they recently completed or what the next stage of growth looks like. During the interview, weaving in your research lets your interviewer know that you’ve done your homework and that you’re specifically interested in working for that company.
2. Develop a 30-60-90 Plan
Your research should also help you identify the company’s needs that you are uniquely qualified to address. Present your interviewer with a brief outline of what you plan to accomplish in your first 30, 60, and 90 days on the job. Be sure to focus on how your strengths relate to your goals. Listen to any feedback you receive and talk about how you could incorporate it into your plan.
3. Follow Up
As your interview draws to a close, reiterate your interest in the position, and be sure to thank the interviewer for their time. Within a day or two after the interview, send a follow-up email. Express how much you enjoyed the interview and highlight one or two things that stood out to you. Thank the interviewer once again, and inquire about the next steps!
