2020 was the year that felt like a decade, but it is finally almost behind us. As we look ahead to 2021, it’s time to leave 2020 in the past and start focusing on the future. Your team has been through a lot, so now is the time to help them move forward by working on their 2021 career goals. Here are some tips:
Find Out Their Individual Goals
Sit down with each team member to learn their professional aspirations and goals. It’s true that every person has a specific role to play on your team, but most of the time a creative manager can find ways to tie employee ambitions to company goals. This can also help reduce turnover, build loyalty, and improve morale.
Create Quantifiable Team Goals
Work with your team to develop specific, clear-cut team goals. These goals should focus on strengthening the company while also supporting individual goals. They should easily divide into milestones, such as sales per month or production per day. Develop incentives for meeting milestones and larger rewards for completing goals.
Hold Everyone Accountable
Build spreadsheets or other systems for Employees and Managers to write out their task lists and keep them up to date. Everyone on the team should have access to these lists, and each person should be held accountable for keeping their own list current. Also, request “start of day” and “end of day” reports to help keep things moving throughout the day. It’s important to check-in with your employees regarding their individual goals every few months. Show your support by doing what you can to help them progress while also holding them accountable.
Put It All Together
To keep everyone on track, create a comprehensive plan for success. Define each goal and determine metrics for deciding when each milestone is met. Spell out how and when you will touch base with employees and what types of feedback you’ll provide. Determine the coaching steps for employees not meeting goals or milestones. As much as possible, involve the entire team in creating the plan, as this will both encourage buy-in and help to ensure that everyone is on the same page.
