If you’re interviewing a lot of candidates for an open position, you could be at risk for interview fatigue. It’s a sort of stressed-out exhaustion that develops when conducting too many interviews in a row without enough breaks. Interview fatigue can cause slip-ups, either rejecting an excellent candidate or hiring one who isn’t really a great choice. Here’s how to beat back interview fatigue and stay engaged through the entire interview process.

Streamline the Process

Create an interview process that focuses on skills and abilities, and be sure to ask the same questions of all candidates. This will help reduce your stress levels and ensure a fair assessment of each applicant, even when you start to get tired. Cut it back to the things that actually matter rather than allowing interviews to wander.

Break It Up

Instead of trying to find the perfect candidate in a single round of interviews, consider a two-interview process. Keep the initial round to just 15 or 20 minutes per interview, and save the in-depth conversations for round two. This lets you compare skills of candidates against the requirements of the role early on in the process, making your consideration list more manageable.

Bring a Colleague

If you have a lot of interviews to conduct in a short time frame, consider asking a colleague or two to help. You can divide up the pile for one-on-one interviews, or work as a team to conduct each interview. Either way, sharing the workload can help keep you feeling fresh and more energetic.

Partner with a Staffing Agency

Interviewing job applicants can be exhausting, especially if you’re already stretched thin. A staffing agency can do the heavy lifting, presenting you with a shortlist of vetted, well-qualified candidates to choose from. You’ll interview just a handful of people to decide which one is the best fit for your company.
